Six Scallops on an Open Bell: A Hanging Flower Practice Pattern

Six scallops fit an open bell with 24 rim stitches when each group uses four base positions. This written practice flower uses that allocation, straight side rounds and a sewn-on hanging loop. It omits the undefined bud and stem from the earlier outline, and is not a verified match to the photographed spray.

Materials and verification

Choose yarn for the flower and optional loop, an appropriate hook, marker, yarn needle and scissors. No filling or wire is used. The written counts are checked, but no physically tested sample, measured gauge or finished dimension is claimed. Evaluate the actual fabric before using this as a decorative hanging flower.

US terms: MR = magic ring; ch = chain; sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; sl st = slip stitch; inc = two sc in one stitch. Work the base and sides in continuous rounds without a joining chain, marking the first stitch. The scallop chains are not counted as dc.

Base and sides

1. R1: 6 sc in MR. Tighten the ring. (6)

5. R5–8: sc in every stitch. Each round has 24 sc.

Keep the upper rim open. The straight rounds provide depth after the increasing base; continuing increases to 36 and immediately adding an edge would be a different construction. Check the actual cup shape and the 24-stitch rim before continuing.

Scalloped rim

After round 8, sl st into the first stitch of the rim. Mark the rim’s stitches in six groups of four if needed. In the first stitch of the first group, work ch 2 and 1 dc. Work 1 dc in the second stitch, ch 2, sl st in the third stitch, then skip the fourth stitch.

Sl st into the first stitch of the next unused group and repeat the same sequence there. Continue for all six groups. After skipping the last group’s fourth stitch, sl st to the first joining location to finish. Cut the yarn and secure the tail through firm stitches inside the flower.

Each group consumes four base positions and makes two dc, two ch-2 sections and one anchoring sl st. The transition sl st into each new group is not an additional petal. There are six scallops and twelve dc in the finished rim.

Optional hanging loop

In the loop colour, ch 21. Starting in the second chain from the hook, sl st in each remaining chain: 20 sl st. Finish, leaving tails at both ends for attachment. This makes a soft cord, not a rigid flower stem.

Bring the two ends together and sew each separately through firm base stitches on the closed end of the bell. Spread the anchors over nearby stitches rather than hanging everything from the centre-ring tail. Secure the ends inside, keeping them away from the scalloped rim.

Check the hanging direction

Hang the sample with the open rim downward and inspect whether it falls as intended. Adjust the attachment before securing the last tail if the loop pulls it sideways. The actual yarn and tension determine drape; the arithmetic does not certify a particular bell silhouette.

Keep loops and decorative hanging objects away from unsupervised children and pets. This flower is not a tested toy or sleep accessory. Follow the yarn’s care instructions, inspect the loop anchors after cleaning, and record the actual dimensions if making matching flowers.
